Ukraine exports first million tons of grain

Ukraine has exported about one million tons of grain since the beginning of the 2011/2012 marketing season (July 2011 through June 2012), Director General of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation (UAC) Serhiy Stoyanov said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Stoyanov recalled that the country had exported 380,000 tons of grain in July 2011 and had already supplied 580,000 tons to foreign markets in August. In his opinion, such an unprecedented low level of grain exports from Ukraine is likely to be "a reflection of the destructive effect of customs duties, as well as the non-reimbursement of VAT during exports, sterilizing the profitability for our producers, which the world market can currently give, amid the much greater competitiveness of Russian grain because of its lower cost for Russian peasants."
According to the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation, Ukraine exported 12.1 million tons of grain in the 2010/2011 marketing season.
