Slowdown in GDP growth in Ukraine

A chief economist at Dragon Capital, Olena Bilan, has said the company estimates that GDP growth in Ukraine in the second quarter of 2011 slowed to 3.5%, from 5.2% in the first.
"The slowdown occurred mainly due to the fact that in the second quarter of 2010, economic growth accelerated significantly against the background of a sharp improvement of the external environment," she said. The expert noted that demand on foreign markets would remain the main impetus to growth for the Ukrainian economy.
"External demand will remain the main engine of growth for the Ukrainian economy in 2011-2012, but its role will be somewhat reduced due to the active resumption of domestic demand, both consumer and investment," Bilan said.
