Minsk raises over $500m in FDI in January-May

In January-May 2011 Minsk has raised over $500 million in foreign direct investment, deputy head of the Investment Department of the Minsk City Hall’s Economic Committee Ivan Vezhnovets said as he met with the Chinese trade and economic delegation on 30 June, BelTA has learned.

The major part of investments was raised by the private sector. According to Ivan Vezhnovets, Minsk is currently implementing more than 3,000 investment projects. The biggest projects are connected with the construction of hotels and administrative and residential complexes, sport facilities. Minsk raised major part of investments from Russia, Austria, Cyprus and Great Britain.

Minsk also implements big investment projects with China. These are the construction of a hotel complex Beijing-Minsk, housing development in Lebyazhy residential area. Belarus’ capital already operates a big enterprise to produce household electric appliances. The industrial output of the company made up over $15 million in 2010.

Belarus offers Chinese businessmen to partake in the construction of a national exhibition center in Minsk, a hotel complex and a water park.

“We have already chosen the land plot to build the China-town multi-purpose complex. It is a land plot in the center of Minsk with the total area of 15-17 ha,” Ivan Vezhnovets said. A business center, a trading center and a residential area may be located there. The land plot has all necessary infrastructures.

The construction of a technological park in Minsk is in progress. Belarus offers China to set up companies there and is ready to provide any kind of help.

Ivan Vezhnovets believes that Chinese investors could benefit from developing trade networks and services in the capital of Belarus. They could develop financial and insurance, health care, high-tech and telecommunication services.

The Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has organized a business matchmaking session between Belarusian and Chinese businessmen on 30 June 2011 during the visit of the Chinese governmental trade and economic delegation. The delegation led by the Chinese Deputy Commerce Minister includes representatives of 16 Chinese companies. The visit is aimed at getting acquainted with the Belarusian investment policy, objects of state-run property liable to privatization and establishing direct trade and economic contacts.
