Taiwan's Export Growth Beats Expectations In May

2011-06-08 14:43:33

Taiwan's exports grew more than expected in May, data from the Finance Ministry showed Wednesday.

Exports rose 9.5 percent year-on-year in May, faster than economists' forecast for an 8.1 percent increase. This was, however, much weaker than April's 24.6 percent growth.

Imports rose 19.3 percent annually compared to expectations for a 11.6 percent increase. In April, imports grew 25.7 percent.

During May, the trade surplus fell to $1.22 billion from $2.96 billion in the previous month, while the consensus called for a surplus of $2.53 billion.

Among the top five commodities, exports of electronic products amounted $7.23 billion, which was 9.2 percent higher than the same month last year.
