2010-11-18 17:50:56

The Brazilian economy slowed down in the third quarter of 2010, the country's Central Bank said Wednesday.

The Central Bank's Economic Activity Indicator registered an average 139.51 points in the third quarter, up 0.35 percent from the previous quarter and 6.79 percent year on year.

The pace of growth was slowing down as the growth of the indicator was lower than in the second quarter, when it expanded 1.2 percent.

In September, the indicator reached 140.16 points, up 0.68 percent from August and 6.12 percent year-on-year, the highest since March.

In the first nine months of the year, the indicator accumulated a rise of 8.84 percent compared with the same period in 2009.

From October 2009 to September 2010, the indicator accumulated a rise of 8.03 percent compared with the previous 12 months.

The indicator is considered a preview of the GDP figures in Brazil. The indicator is also taken into consideration by the Central Bank's Monetary Policy Committee in decision-making.
