Ukraine wants to balance trade with China

2011-05-27 16:43:18

Turnover between Ukraine and China has been quickly growing, however a "discrepancy" in its structure has been preserved. The ways for leveling the situation were discussed in Beijing by representatives of the Economic Development and Trade Ministry of Ukraine and the Ministry of Commerce of China.

"For some time past, Ukraine-China commodity turnover grew by 44% and quite really it could reach USD 10 billion next year, as it was stated during a visit of President Viktor Yanukovych to China. But it should be balanced. Still, we observe a serious negative balance in relation to Ukraine," Deputy Economic Development and Trade Minister Vasyl Marmazov told an UKRINFORM correspondent, following his meeting with Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce Zhong Shan.

By results of 2010, the volume of bipartite turnover of Ukraine and China made up USD 6.018 billion. Negative for Ukraine balance reached USD 3.385 billion. In Q1 2011, turnover amounted to USD 1.708 billion, negative balance - USD 775.79 million.

"We named to Chinese counterparts the whole number of sectors, where we would boost our economic presence in China. These are aircraft construction, machine building products, aircraft engines, chemical industry and agriculture. We want to concentrate on those spheres now in order to reach balanced commodity turnover," Marmazov said.

According to him, Chinese counterparts took proposals with understanding and are ready to work in those directions. "We hope that with an increase of goods turnover, we will reach its balanced structure," the Deputy Minister noted.

Those and other issues will be included into the agenda of a meeting of the Subcommittee for Trade-Economic Cooperation that will be held in October and November this year in Kyiv.

Marmazov also informed that ministries of the two countries presently have been working over economic fulfillment of a program for a visit of China President Hu Jintao to Ukraine on June 18-20. To this visit, in particular, the Ukraine-China business forum will be timed.

"This will be an area where a direct dialogue is expected between Ukrainian and Chinese business, industrials and entrepreneurs with the aim of intensification of already existing contacts and projects and arranging the new ones," the Deputy Minister noted.
