EGYPT’S central wheat purchasing agency says the country has at least four months of wheat stocks left.

The absence of the General Authority for Supply Commodities (GASC) from the world market since late February has become a talking point among the wheat trade, given Egypt’s status as the world’s largest importer of wheat.

However, in spite of the overthrow of former president Hosni Mubarak as part of the ‘Arab Spring’ that has seen unrest throughout the Middle East, GASC reports it is business as usual and reaffirmed it has funds for future purchases.

A GASC spokesman told wire services that it was currently focusing on domestic purchases.
