Since it is necessary to change the constitution before adopting the euro, it is not certain that Poland would join the euro-zone during the eight-year term of office of Mario Draghi as the head of the European Central Bank (EBC), finance minister Jacek Rostowski has said, as quoted by business portal pb.pl.
Draghi is likely to replace Jean-Claude Trichet at the EBC's helm this year.
The Polish constitution now states that the zloty is the official currency in Poland and vests monetary policy in the National Bank of Poland (NBP). When Poland joined the European Union in 2004, it obliged itself to take on the euro, but with no time restraints. The current government, which initially targeted joining the euro-zone in 2011-2012, now avoids declaring a new target date.
