Belarus condemns EU resolution as aimed at destabilizing econ situation

2011-05-13 11:58:18

The European Parliament’s resolution on Belarus is geared to destabilize the economic situation in the country and runs counter to the international law, the press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, Andrei Savinykh, said on Friday.

“The authors of the resolution are seeking to use the global financial crisis to destabilize the economic situation in the country. As a matter of fact, they call for measure that would ruin the stability of Belarusian society and well-being of the people,” he said.

In his words, id such measures are taken, Belarus will have to take some steps in response. “These will be adequate response measures aimed mostly at persons and structures that are active generators of anti-Belarus actions,” the spokesman stressed.

“The European Parliament is repeating and imposing distorted interpretations of the developments in Belarus that hove nothing to do with the real state of things. Our efforts to resume a constructive dialogue dash against ultimatums and threats disguised as principled position,” he went on.

According to Savinykh, Belarus will “continue efforts to resume constructive cooperation.” “We are confidents that the philosophy of pressure and confrontation displayed by the European Parliament has no chances for survival in the long-term perspective,” he added.

In its resolution passed at a plenary meeting in Strasbourg on Thursday, the European Parliament “strongly condemns all convictions on the basis of the criminal charge of ‘mass rioting’ in Minsk of December 19, 2010] and finds them arbitrary and politically motivated.” It called on the European Commission, the Council, the High Representative and other European Union partner countries “to extend the restrictive measures against the Belarusian regime, including by imposing targeted economic sanctions, in particular against state-owned enterprises.”
