In Ukraine the market is 80-90% provided with domestic sugar, chairman of the State Reserve Agency Oleksiy Leliuk has said.
"In Ukraine, despite the fact that half of the plants had already been cut for scrap, the market is 80-90% provided with own sugar. The government makes adjustments to avoid an excessive sugar booms, the issuance of licenses and quotas on sugar imports and refining of raw sugar at our facilities. This year, the situation with the price of sugar has been stable and calm," he said.
Leliuk recalled that in Russia in relation to the Ukrainian sugar there are barriers and quotas set since the 1990s, so the Ukrainian sugar is not exported to Russia.
"Another approach is in Belarus: they process for themselves a cane sugar, and beet is sent to Russia, making money ... In Ukraine the situation is different: in contrast to Belarus and Russia, we have no free mutual penetration of goods. Unfortunately, because Russia is a huge food market. I hope that our government will establish more efficient trade ties with Russia," the State Reserve Agency chief underscored.
