Ukraine resumes raw sugar import

2011-05-10 16:51:11

Ukraine, which actually has not imported sugar this season, started to cover sugar deficit by supplies from abroad.

The first ship from Brazil with raw sugar, within the frames of the allocated quota for the product's import, is being unloaded at Odesa terminals (Ukraine's south). Its consignee is OJSC Volodymyr-Volynsky sugar refinery, which has processed the major part of raw sugar imported to Ukraine in the previous years, UKRINFORM reports with reference to ABC Agro Consulting. The enterprise expects "sweet import" at 130,000 tons this year, which makes up a half of the preferential quota volume.

Despite the start of import, raw sugar will be affordable for processing only in the second half of June, because in April-May total raw sugar with supply in May has been already purchased.

The situation can be remedied only in case that the Economy Development and Trade Ministry allows import of raw sugar from Thailand, within the allocated quota, since at Brazilian seaports there is no possibility for an increase of capacities.
