Georgia, Russia to meet again in Swiss city on WTO membership

2011-04-29 11:53:13

Georgia and Russia are scheduled to open their next round of talks on Russia's membership in the World Trade Organization in the Swiss city of Bern.

The negotiations start on Thursday and finish a day later.

The two countries held a previous round of talks in early March this year, also in Bern.

Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze has told the media earlier in the week that there are some non-political issues that Russia has to solve first before the two countries can delve into WTO accession talks.

The Georgian diplomat also said that the United States did not put pressure on the South Caucasus country to speed up the talks with Russia.

During the March talks, Georgia demanded transparency over two Caucasus mountain passes at Psou and Roki and demanded that Georgian customs be placed at these two checkpoints.

The March negotiations were initiated by Russia, according to Georgian sources.
