Growth of foodstuff prices in Moscow City totaled 4.5% since the beginning of the year, the chief of city government’s department for economic policies and development, Marina Ogloblina said Thursday in course of an online conference.

In the same period of 2010, the prices grew 3.7%, she said.

“Although the prices continued increasing in the past weeks of April, the rate of the increase slowed down noticeably,” Ogloblina said.

She predicted “a continued increase of prices for some commodities and a decrease for others during the summertime” for objective reasons.

“I don’t rule out a fall of prices for milk and dairy products because milk yields usually double in the first period of summer warmth while the consumption of electricity goes down,” Ogloblina said.

“Also, we expect a decrease of prices of eggs because they also depend on seasonal factors,” she said.

“Wholesale prices for potatoes and other vegetables have been reducing of late and this will eventually bring about a reduction of retail prices,” Ogloblina said.

However, vegetables of the new harvest will appear on the market at the end of spring, thus sending the prices in that segment up.
