Minister: Food Prices in Bulgaria Have Gone Crazy

2011-04-18 16:58:06

Prices of foods in Bulgaria are speculative and unrealistic, according to Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Naydenov.

Speaking for Darik Radio Saturday, Naydenov commented that retailers heighten food prices on a massive scale, adopting a strategy to make profits by exploiting the consumer, rather than relying on a stable low-margin sale.

Minister Naydenov gave an example with the prices of lamb meat on the eve of the major holidays of Easter (April 24) and St. George's Day (May 6).

"It is ridiculous that, with a producer price of lamb of BGN 5-6 per kg, the retail price soars to BGN 15 per kg," commented Naydenov.

He furthermore explained that sellers rely on a "one hit" strategy, attempting to win as much as they can around holidays, when people are more prone to spending.

"It is high time that we as consumers develop a more responsible consciousness and boycott those speculative prices," said the agriculture minister.
