India inflation eases to 9.18 percent

India s food inflation eased to 9.18 percent for the week ended at March 26. According to official figures the year on year food inflation rate fell to 9.18% from 9.50% in the previous week the lowest level in almost four months on the back of a decline in the prices of pulses.
The last time food inflation was lower than this level was during the week ended November 27 last year when it was registered at 8.69 per cent. However the index of food articles was up 0.4% to 179.5 during the week from 178.7 in the previous week.
During the week under review prices of pulses fell by 5.39 per cent on an annual basis. However other food items continued to exhibit an upward trend in terms of the rate of price rise.
The general inflation rate was 8.31% in February. The central bank has raised its inflation estimate for the end of March thrice the last time to 8% from 7% at its March 17 policy review.
