Key points of issue #21, dated May 19 - 26, 2014:
Weather & Crop conditions & Sowing
* Ukraine: 7.599 Ml ha (91% of intended area) of spring grain crops had been sown by May 22
* Spring crop planting in Russia is at a six-year high now
* Russia: As of May 23, spring cereals were planted on 24.4 Ml ha (76.5% of forecast), or up 3.7 Mln ha year-on-year
* Russia: Weather remained dry and hot in the Central, Volga regions as well as in some parts of the Urals and Siberia
* In Kazakhstan, grains planted on more than 38% (5.7 Mln ha) of area and oilseeds on 72%
Grain Market
* Russia’s grain crop may reach 100 MMT this year - Ag Minister
* Ukraine is entering an inter-season period. Part of trading companies have already completed their export programs and stopped purchases
* 930 KMT of grain was shipped through the Ukrainian ports from May 1-19
* RusAgroTrans forecasts this year’s total grain crop in Russia at 95-97 MMT
* Russia: 22.9 MMT of grain was exported from July 2013 till April 2014
* Grain exports from Russia will reach almost 26 MMT this crop year - Igor Pavensky
* Russia: Domestic price growth is fueled by scarce supply of wheat and quality corn in the free market
* Russia: Despite low grain stocks in the domestic market, grain exports remain active – they totaled more than 1 ММТ by mid-May
* Russia: grain inventories in the South on May 1 were already a few percents lower than at the same time last year
* The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (UN FAO) will open an office in Kazakhstan.
* Moldova: Ag Ministry forecasts a wheat crop at the 2013 level (1 MMT)
