China will remove or simplify administrative approvals to encourage mergers and acquisitions (M&A) between companies, the State Council said in a statement Monday.

The move is part of authorities' efforts to solve industrial overcapacity and increase Chinese companies' competitiveness.

Companies will conduct M&A deals in accordance with their own will without government intervention, the statement said.
