Romania trade balance was neutral in January, with imports matching exports, following a EUR 2 million surplus in December, according to data from Eurostat.

Exports fell about 10 percent over the new year, from EUR 1.4 billion in December to EUR 1.2 billion in January.

Meanwhile, imports slightly increased from EUR 1.1 billion to EUR 1.2 billion over the period, according to the seasonally adjusted data.

Across the whole of 2013, Romania recorded a trade deficit of EUR 5.7 billion, a significant drop from a deficit of EUR 9.6 billion in 2012.

Exports reached EUR 49.6 billion last year, up from EUR 45 billion in 2012, while imports amounted to EUR 55.3 billion, up 1 percent on 2012’s total of EUR 54.6 billion.

The first estimate for the euro area (EA18) trade in goods balance with the rest of the world in January 2014 gave a EUR 0.9 billion surplus, compared with EUR 5.4 billion deficit in January 2013.

The December 2013 balance was + EUR 13.8 billion, compared with + EUR9.7 billion in December 2012.

The first estimate for the January 2014 in terms of the EU28 trade balance found a EUR 13 billion deficit, compared with EUR-17.7  billion in January 2013.

In December 2013 the balance was + EUR 8.1 billion, compared with a deficit of EUR 2.4 billion in December 2012.
