Agriculture Ministry of Ukraine predicts grain harvest at 42 million tons

The Ukrainian Ministry of Agricultural Policy and Food has forecast the grain harvest in 2011 at 42 million tons, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada's committee on agrarian policy and land relations, Hryhoriy Kaletnik, said at a meeting of the economic council.
He said that such a harvest was sufficient to ensure domestic consumption and form the export potential.
The area under spring grain crops in 2011 will amount to 7.5 million hectares, compared to 7.2 million hectares in 2010. According to analysts, the total area under grain crops in 2011, due to a reduction in the area under winter crops, is expected to reach 15.6 million hectares against last year's 15.9 million hectares.
In 2010, Ukraine harvested 39.3 million tons of grain and leguminous crops in weight after threshing, which was 14.6% less than a year earlier, when the harvest was 46 million tons.
