Abnormal warmth weakens about 10% of winter crops - Kulbida

Due to abnormally warm weather at the beginning of winter, about 10% of winter crops are in the weakened state.
Director of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center Mykola Kulbida told a briefing Monday, a Ukrinform correspondent reports.
"Following a long warm period, a considerable part of wintering crops could even improve their condition, and therefore, less than 10% are now in the weakened state. However, this does not exceed the average statistical area, which is observed in Ukraine every year," Kulbida said.
He also noted that under condition, when average daily temperature exceeds +5 degrees, the plants lose the nutrients they need in the process of subsequent overwintering.
"But a cold spell and temperature reduction is a very favorable factor for wintering crops to calm down and to continue wintering more or less normally," he added.
