Ukraine cuts foreign trade deficit by nearly $3 billion in eight months

The deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in the first eight months of 2013 shrank by $2.7 billion compared to the same period in 2012, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine has reported.

"The deficit amounted to $7.397 billion (in January-August 2012 the deficit was $10.11 billion)," reads the statement.

The ratio of coverage of imports by exports was 0.85 (0.82 in January-August 2012).

According to the State Statistics Service, in January-August 2013 exports of goods shrank by 9.1% year-on-year, to $41.128 billion. Meanwhile, imports fell by 12.4 %, to $48.524 billion.

The formation of the deficit was triggered by individual commodity groups: mineral fuels, oil and refining products (-$10.288 billion), vehicles, other than rail transport (-$3.703 billion), mechanical machinery (-$2.036 billion), plastics, polymers (-$1.982 billion), pharmaceuticals (-$1.721 billion), and electrical machinery (-$1.669 billion).

Foreign trade operations were conducted with partners from 215 countries.

Exports to CIS countries amounted to 36.1% of total exports, Europe - 26.8%, including to the European Union - 26.2%, Asia - 26.3%, Africa - 7%, America - 3.7%, and Australia and Oceania - 0.1%.

Among the major partner countries exports of goods to China grew by 46.4%, Turkey - by 2.3%, and Italy - by 1.8 %. Simultaneously, exports to Egypt shrank by 17.5%, Russia - by 13.8%, Kazakhstan - by 11.1%, and Poland - by 8.4%.

Imports from Europe amounted to 37.3% of total imports, including from the European Union - 35.3%, from CIS countries - 34.5%, Asia - 21%, America - 6%, Africa - 1%, Australia and Oceania - 0.1%.

Among the largest partner countries imports of goods from Poland grew by 14.9%, China - by 9.1%, and Germany - by 2.4%. Supplies from Belarus shrank by 30.9%, Russia - by 25.4%, Italy - by 9.8%, and the United States - by 9.7%.

As Ukrinform reported, the deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in January-July 2013 amounted to $5.812 billion.
