Ukraine more than halves foreign trade deficit

The deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in January-May 2013 shrank by UAH 3.3 billion, or 2.4 times, year-over-year, to UAH 2.433 billion, the State Statistics Service has reported.
"The negative balance was influenced by certain commodity groups: mineral fuels, oil and oil refining products (a fall of UAH 5.58 5 billion), vehicles, not including railway vehicles (a fall of UAH 2.126 billion), electrical machinery (a fall of UAH 1.205 billion), plastics and polymers (a fall of UAH 1.167 billion) mechanical machinery (a fall of UAH 1.078 billion), and pharmaceutical products (a fall of UAH 934.3 million)," the State Statistics Service reported.
In general, in January-May 2013, exports of goods amounted to UAH 27.193 billion, and import reached UAH 29.626 billion. Compared with the same period in 2012, exports amounted to 96.5% and imports reached 87.3%.
The ratio of coverage of imports by exports amounted to 0.92 (0.83 in January-May 2012).
Ukraine traded in goods with 205 countries.
Exports of goods to CIS countries amounted to 34.4% of total exports, to Europe - 27%, including to the European Union - 26.7%, Asia - 25.2%, America and Africa - 6.6% each, and Australia and Oceania - 0.1%.
Goods were mainly exported to Russia - 23.7% of total exports, Turkey - 6%, China - 4.5%, Italy - 4%, Poland - 3.8%, Kazakhstan - 3.4%, and Egypt - 3.2%.
Ukraine mainly exported ferrous metals and products from them - 26.8% of total exports (a fall of 12.9% compared to January-May 2012). Exports of mineral products amounted to 13.7% (a rise of 7.6%), vegetable products - 11.1% (a fall of 12.1%), mechanical and electrical machinery - 10.2% (a rise of 2.3%) , products of the chemical and allied industries - 7.9% (a rise of 5.6%), vehicles, aircraft and vessels - 7.3% (a fall of 6.5%), fats and animal or vegetable oils - 5.9% (a fall of 4.2%), and food products - 5.6% (a rise of 17.8%).
Imports from Europe amounted to 36.1% of total imports, including from the European Union - 34%, from CIS countries - 34.7%, Asia - 21.4%, America - 6.5%, Africa - 1.1%, and Australia and Oceania - 0.1%.
Goods were mainly imported from Russia - 28.4%, China - 11.6%, Germany - 8.8%, Poland - 5.2%, Belarus - 4.7%, the United States - 4.2%, and Italy - 2 6%.
Ukraine mainly imported mineral products - 26.7% of imports (a reduction of 30%). Imports of mechanical and electrical machinery amounted to 17% (a fall of 2.3%), products of the chemical and allied industries - 10.8% (a fall of 5.1%), vehicles, aircraft and vessels - 8.3% (a fall of 31.4%), non-precious metals and related products - 6.5% (a fall of 7.8%), including ferrous metals and products from them - 4.5% (a fall of 8.8%), polymers, plastics and related products - 6.1% (a rise of 5.1%), vegetable products - 4.9% (a rise of 20.6%), food products - 3.9% (a rise of 4.2%), and textiles and textile products - 3.1% (a rise of 0.7%).
Export and import operations were most actively conducted by companies in the city of Kyiv, as well as in Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, Luhansk, Odesa and Zaporizhzhia regions.
