Ukrainian economy growing due to domestic demand

2011-03-03 17:42:57

The negative results of the financial sector and the slow pace of export growth have led to a reduction in the pace of the recovery of the Ukrainian economy - to 4.2%. The figures published by the State Statistics Service indicate that the acceleration of economic growth was unexpectedly influenced by domestic demand, rather than external trade, economists say.

According to an updated assessment of Ukraine's GDP in 2010, the volume of nominal GDP at actual prices grew by 18.9%, to UAH 1.086 trillion (UAH 7.94 / USD 1), while without taking into account the inflationary factor, the real economy grew by 4.2% .

A preliminary assessment was similar, but experts expected the acceleration of the annual figure to 4.5%. The reason for the preservation of growth pace was reviewed data for January-September, rather than poor data for the fourth quarter, economists said.

"It is surprising that in the table of GDP estimates under categories of final consumption, export growth was only 4.6%, which means that in the fourth quarter there was a decline - at about 6%. This is not fixed by business, so we can say that the matter is not in one quarter, but in the review of data from previous periods," said Vitaliy Vavryshchuk, an analyst from the BG Capital investment company.
