Vilkul: Transport corridors may ensure up to 5% of Ukraine's GDP growth

2013-05-13 10:15:14

Creation of transport corridors via Ukraine's territory may ensure GDP growth up to 5%.

The press service of Vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul told UKRINFORM.

“Ukraine has a large transit potential. But Ukraine has not a single transport corridor, which consists of the first category highways over their whole length. In creation of such roads within the frames of transport corridors South-North, West-East, the Black Sea Basin - Eastern Europe - Russia, South-West - South East, potential of the country's GDP growth will be up to 5%,” Vilkul has said, commenting on the Concept of the strategy for development of the road-transport economy, which was developed based on the analysis of the best practices of the road transport development and management in the European Union countries.

He stressed that the key automobile transit flows via our country coincide with the main internal motor roads of Ukraine and pass in four directions:

The North-South flow ensures 46% of the transit turnover. This route has only about 50% of the first category roads.

The East-West flow makes up 24% of transit. The share of the first category roads is almost 25%.

A flow from the Black Sea basin to Eastern Europe and Russia makes up 20% of transit turnover. The share of the first category roads is almost 3%.

The lesser share of the first category roads, almost 2%, is on the route South-West - South East, which provides for 3% of transit.

As reported, the Concept of the strategy for the road transport economy development envisages reformation of Ukravtodor, which should be accompanied by an increase of the funding for maintenance, repairs and construction of roads from UAH 16.9 billion, envisaged in the budget, to UAH 40 billion a year.

There are 52,000 kilometers of principal roads in Ukraine.

At the same time, Vice Prime Minister Oleksandr Vilkul proposes to hand over 117,700 kilometers of local roads jointly with financing under responsibility of regional administrations and, personally, chairmen of regional state administrations in order to personify responsibility for the quality of such roads in every region.
