Agriculture grew by 9.5% in Armenia in 2012, minister says

Agriculture grew by 9.5% in Armenia by the end of 2012, the country’s minister of agriculture Sergo Karapetyan reported.
Agricultural production amounted to 840.5bln drams over the year, the minister told a briefing agret the government meeting Thursday.
Among major projects that contributed to the growth was provision of nitrogenous fertilizers and diesel fuel to farmers at low costs, the minister said. A total of 30.7 tons of such fertilizers and 25 million litres of diesel fuel were provided to farmers during the year.
The minister said agriculture growth stood at 2.1% in January, as compared to the same period of the year before.
On October 21, 2011, Armenian government passed a decree to develop biofertilizers market in the country. Under the decree, Armenia is exporting about 25-30,000 tons of nitrogenous fertilizers mainly from Georgia, Iran and Russia every year. The first consignment of nitrogenous fertilizers arrived in
Armenia on February 12, 2012. Earlier, the minister said farmers will get the fertilizers at affordable prices – 6,000 drams per bag.
According to the ministry of agriculture, today Armenia uses about 40,000 fertilizers of all types, including nitrogenous, potash and phosphate fertilizers.
