Turkmenistan to launch WTO accession talks

Turkmenistan will start negotiations on accession into the World Trade Organization, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov said at the government meeting on January 18.
The President of Turkmenistan ordered Vice Prime Minister Annamukhammet Gochiev, responsible for economy and finances, to study regulations for joining WTO and to prepare suggestions on state committee creation, which will address WTO accession issues.
Turkmenistan had never considered joining WTO since independence day in 1991. José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Commission, raised the question for the first time during his visit to Ashgabat in January 2011. José Manuel Barroso called Turkmenistan government for joining as it would improve trade relations between Turkmenistan and the European Union.
