Merchandise trade deficit up almost to $13.8 billion - state statistics

Merchandise trade deficit of Ukraine for 11 months of 2012 amounted to 13,776 million U.S. dollars. For the same period last year, the deficit was 12,794.7 million U.S. dollars. Thus, the deficit rose by 981.3 million U.S. dollars, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine reported on Monday.

"In January-November 2012, commodity exports amounted to 63,084.7 million dollars, imports 76,860.7 million dollars. Compared to the corresponding period of 2011, exports increased by 1.9%, imports by 2.9%. The deficit is 13,776 million dollars (over 11 months in 2011 12,794.7 million dollars)," according to the state statistics.

According to the State Statistics Service, export-import coverage ratio is 0.82 (for 11 months in 2011 - 0.83).

Foreign trade operations were held with partners from 213 countries. The volume of commodity export to the CIS countries amounted to 36.9% of total exports, to Asia 25.8%, Europe 25%, including European Union countries 24.5%, Africa 8.2%, America 3.8%, Australia and Oceania 0.1%. The most significant exports went to the Russian Federation - 25.7% of total exports (railway locomotives, iron and steel, mechanical machines).

Among the major partner countries, commodity exports to Egypt increased by 2.3 times, Kazakhstan by 42.3%, Belarus 15.1%. At the same time, exports to Italy decreased by 20.3%, Russian Federation 10.3%, Poland 6.4% and Turkey 0.5%.

The basis of the commodity structure of Ukrainian exports consisted of ferrous metals and products from them - 26.8% of total exports (13.1% down compared with 11 months in 2011). Vegetable products accounted for 13% (+71.7%), mineral products 11.1% (-25%), mechanical and electrical machines 10.1% (an increase of 5.2%), ground transportation vehicles, aircraft and vessels 8.7% (+25.4%), chemicals and related industry products 7.4% (-3.8%), fats and oils of animal or vegetable origin 6.1% (+24.1%), prepared foods 5% (+18.5%).

Imports from the CIS were 41.3% of the total volume, from Europe 32.3%, including from the European Union 30.7%, Asia 19.8%, America 5.3%, Africa 1%, Australia and Oceania 0.2%.

Among all imports, the biggest volumes came from the Russian Federation - 32.9%, China - 9.3%, Germany - 8%, Belarus - 6.1%, Poland - 4.2%, the USA - 3.5% and Italy - 2.6%.

Imports increased from Belarus - by 24.9%, China - 23.6%, Italy - 15.2%, USA - 14.5%, Poland - 12.2%. Supplies from Russia decreased by 5.2%.

As reported, the deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods for 10 months of 2012 amounted to 12,769.7 million U.S. dollars.
