EBRD invests over EUR 900 million in Ukrainian economy in 2012

2012-12-20 11:05:41

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development has invested over 900 million euros in the public and private sectors of Ukraine in 2012, senior adviser of the bank in Kyiv, Anton Usov said in Kyiv on Wednesday.

"The bank can invest in the Ukrainian economy about a billion euros (per year) - both on private and public projects. As of the current moment... we have already managed to invest about 900 million euros (from the beginning of 2012 - Ed.)," he said.

According to Usov, as regards the public sector, the bank in 2012 finished financing the highway Kyiv - Chop; contracts were signed and tender procedures were launched on the Dnipropetrovsk subway. A few days ago, contracts were signed for the purchase of rolling stock for the Ukrainian railways, and a deal was made on the work to improve air navigation systems at Ukraine's major airports, in Kyiv and Odesa in the first place. In the private sector, most of the EBRD's investments in 2012 went to finance agriculture - about 220 million euros.

At the same time, according to Usov, EBRD's investment in the Ukrainian economy in 2012 will be lower compared to 2011, when the bank invested more than EUR 1 billion. "Frankly, a great miracle should happen for us to invest projects to the extent that was achieved in the past year. It is hard for me to give an exact figure (of the final volume of EBRD investments to Ukraine in 2012 - Ed.), as some time is still left until the end of the year, but last year we invested a little more than 1 billion euros; this year such a result will not be achieved anyway," the senior adviser to the bank in Kyiv said.
