Developed economies will likely expand at a slightly faster pace in 2013 than estimated earlier, with the global economy expected to perform better than this year, International Monetary Fund's Managing Director Christine Lagarde said.

Advanced countries would grow 1.6 percent in 2013, Lagarde said in an interview given to Chilean newspaper La Tercera on Sunday. It is slightly faster than the 1.5 percent growth forecast made in October.

The global economy is seen expanding at a faster rate of 3.6 percent next year than 3.3 percent projected for this year. Emerging economies and low-income economies are forecast to grow by 5.6 percent. Eurozone may grow 0.2 percent next year, she said.

"So, 2013 will be slightly better than 2012," the IMF Chief said.

Lagarde, who was on a two-day visit to Chile, dismissed the danger of a break-up of the Eurozone and hoped that there will be an agreement to resolve the U.S. fiscal cliff.

The IMF chief, meanwhile, cautioned Chile about its growing external deficit despite the country's "dramatic macroeconomic framework".
