Ukraine. Merchandise trade deficit up to almost $12.8 billion - state statistics

The merchandise trade deficit of Ukraine for ten months of 2012 amounted to 12,769.7 million U.S. dollars. For the same period last year, the deficit amounted to 11,378.5 million dollars. Thus, the deficit has increased by 1,391.2 million dollars, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine reported on Wednesday.

"In January-October 2012, merchandise exports amounted to 57,199 million U.S. dollars, imports 69,968.7 million USD. Compared to the corresponding period of 2011, exports increased by 2.8%, imports by 4.4%. The deficit was 12,769.7 million dollars (for 10 months in 2011 also negative - 11,378.5 million dollars)," the report reads.

According to the State Statistics Service, export import coverage ratio is 0.82 (for 10 months in 2011 - 0.83).

Foreign trade operations were held with partners from 212 countries of the world. The export of commodities to the CIS countries accounted for 37% of total exports, to Asia - 26.1%, Europe - 24.7%, including European Union countries - 24.2%, Africa - 8.2%, America - 3.8%, Australia and Oceania - 0.1%. The most significant exports were made to the Russian Federation - 25.8% of total exports (railway locomotives, ferrous metals, mechanical tools).

Among the major partner countries, commodity exports to Egypt increased by 2.6 times, Kazakhstan - 46.4%, Belarus - 16%, and India - by 6.4%. Simultaneously, exports to Italy decreased by 25.2%, Russia - 9.9%, Poland - 6.2%.

The basis of the commodity structure of Ukrainian exports was made by ferrous metals and products from them - 27.2% of total exports (12.2% down compared with 10 months in 2011). Vegetable products accounted for 12.5% (-80.6%), mineral products - 11.3% (-22.6%), machinery and electrical devices - 10.1% (an increase of 5.6%), ground transportation means, aircraft, vessels - 8.9% (+25.6%), chemicals and related industry products - 7.4% (-1.9%), fats and oils of animal or vegetable origin - 6.1% (+25.9%), finished foods - 4.9% (+17.6%).

Imports from CIS countries were 41.5% of the total, from Europe - 32.1%, including from the European Union - 30.5%, from Asia - 19.8%, America - 5.4%, Africa - 1%, Australia and Oceania - 0.2%.

The biggest imports came from the Russian Federation - 32.9%, China - 9.3%, Germany - 8%, Belarus - 6.3%, Poland - 4.2%, USA - 3.6%, and Italy - 2.6%.

Imports from Belarus increased by 33.1%, China - 29.5%, USA - 20.3%, Italy - 19.4%, Poland - 11.3%. Supplies from Russia decreased by 4.8%.

As reported, the deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods for the first nine months of 2012 amounted to 11,474.6 million U.S. dollars. For the same period last year, the deficit amounted to 9,588.6 million dollars.
