Prysiazhniuk: Gross grain harvest to reach around 46 m tons

2012-11-07 15:15:07

The gross grain harvest in Ukraine in 2012 will amount to about 46 million tons.

Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk announced this at a briefing at the Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday, UKRINFORM correspondents reported.

"The gross harvest is expected at 46 million tons of grain, and it is the third largest figure over the period of [Ukraine's] independence," the minister said.

He said that the harvesting of late crops was currently being completed. In particular, 43.5 million tons of grain was threshed on an area of 14 million hectares (96%), and 16.5 million tons of corn was harvested on 81% of the areas.

As for sugar beets, Ukraine threshed 15.5 million tons from 87% of the areas. "1.4 million tons of sugar has already been produced, with the target being 1.8 million tons. This will completely meet the domestic demand and ensure the domestic consumption of sugar," Prysiazhniuk said.

The minister noted that the stable price situation was projected on the vegetable market. "Today, the price situation on the vegetable market is low enough. It is believed that the price for the 'borsch set' will be stable, and it is lower than last year," Prysiazhniuk added.
