Statistics: Deficit of foreign trade in goods grows by 23.7%, to USD 10.1 b

The deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in the first eight months of 2012 amounted to USD 10.1 billion, the State Statistics Service of Ukraine has reported.

In the same period last year the deficit was USD 8.168 billion, thus, the negative balance grew by 23.7%.

"In January-August 2012, exports of goods totaled USD 45.267 billion, while imports reached USD 55.367 billion. Compared to the same period of 2011, exports grew by 3%, and imports rose by 6.3%," reads the statement.

According to the State Statistics Service, the export-import coverage ratio was 0.82 (in January-August 2011 - 0.84).

Ukraine conducted foreign trade operations with 209 countries.

Exports of goods to CIS countries accounted for 37.1% of total exports, Asia - 26.9%, Europe - 24.7%, including European Union countries - 24.1%, Africa - 7.5%, America - 3.7%, and Australia and Oceania - 0.1%.

Among Ukraine's biggest partners, exports of goods to Egypt grew by 2.8 times, Kazakhstan by 52.2%, and India by 19.4%. At the same time, exports to Italy shrank by 30.3%, Russia by 8.3%, Poland by 6.5%, and Turkey by 4.2%.

Ukraine mainly exported ferrous metals and products from them - 28.2% of total exports (a fall of 11.4% compared to January-August 2011), mineral products - 11.8% (-18%), vegetable products - 11.2% (+76.2%), and machinery and electrical machinery - 10% (+6.4%).

Imports from CIS countries amounted to 41.5% of total imports, Europe - 31.8%, including from European Union countries - 30.3%, Asia - 19.7%, America - 5.7%, Africa - 1%, and Australia and Oceania - 0.3%.

In the total volume of imports the largest supplies were made from Russia - 32.8%, China - 9%, Germany - 8%, Belarus - 6.4%, Poland - 4%, the United States - 3.8%, and Italy - 2.7%.

Imports from Belarus grew by 44.7%, China by 27.3%, the United States by 25.7%, Italy by 20.9%, Poland by 10.4%, and Germany by 6.5%. Supplies from Russia shrank by 5.1%.

As UKRINFORM reported, the deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in January-July 2012 totaled USD 8.659 billion, while in the same period in 2011 it was USD 8.735 billion.
