Ukrainian agrarian sector may boost production to USD 50-60 billion

2012-10-12 10:30:14

Gross domestic product in the agrarian sector of Ukraine may be about USD 50-60 billion under condition of reaching the average European level.

InvestUkraine head Serhiy Yevtushenko has said about this at a round table "Problems of Development of the Agrarian Sector of Ukraine" on Thursday in Kyiv.

"At the expense of the fact that the yield reaches the average European level, with the better land resource and better climatic conditions with us, we can boost production in the agricultural sphere twofold, conditionally speaking to USD 50-60 billion. This is absolutely real," he said specifying that in 2011-2012, approximate GDP level in the Ukrainian agrarian sector reached about USD 30 billion.

Yevtushenko noted that Ukraine exports agricultural products at approximately USD 12 billion. "In other words, this sector is a real supplier of hard currency to Ukraine. Not only metallurgical and chemical industry, but agriculture," he said.

At the same time, the InvestUkraine head stressed that for an increase of the yield it is necessary to use "up-to-date agricultural machinery and modern agrarian science." Yevtushenko, in particular, pointed out to the fact that Ukraine in harvesting of grain crops uses "technology of the day before yesterday's generation," when about 15% of the yield is lost, while modern grain harvesters lose only 1-2%.
