UKRAINE’S GOVERNMENT MAY FREE CORN

2011-02-04 14:37:17

Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy published a draft resolution which may free Ukrainian corn for export.  After five months of keeping Ukrainian corn locked up on farms and in elevators the government has finally relented, as the locked up corn is beginning to spoil, and is thinking of returning freedom of movement to corn.  International plant rights monitors welcome the move by Ukraine’s ministry of economy, but also ask the question why corn was locked up in the first place.  In the current marketing year Ukraine produced 11.9 million tones and had 700,000 tones in reserves before the year started.  Some experts believe that change in position may have come as a result of the government finally finishing celebrating the old New Year, and in a moment of sobriety before beginning to celebrate the Chinese Lunar New Year decided to release some of the crops it held locked up.  Perhaps Barley will be next?
