The Slovenian economy contracted in the second quarter, after remaining stagnant in the previous quarter, data released by the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia showed Friday.

Gross domestic product (GDP) declined a seasonally adjusted 1 percent quarter-over-quarter in the second quarter, after holding flat in the preceding three-month period.

Compared to the second quarter of 2011, the unadjusted GDP fell by 3.2 percent in the second quarter, reversing first quarter's 0.2 percent gain.

Domestic consumption decreased 6.8 percent annually during the month, while government consumption dropped 2 percent. Gross fixed capital formation was lower by 22.1 percent compared to a year earlier.

In the first half of the year, GDP fell by 1.6 percent from the corresponding period a year earlier, the agency said.
