Nearly 100 thousand hectares of free land will be leased against a symbolic payment. The farmer that leases it, can exploit the land for 10 to 99 years. The General Director of Land Protection in the Ministry of Agriculture explains for "AS" which areas will be leased.

"The Ministry of Agriculture has pinpointed the land that is included in the undivided land category. The land rejected to be taken into ownership by farming families in former agriculture cooperatives. The aim of this guide is to extenuate leasing procedures to the interested farmers or to other entrepreneurship that want to introduce this land to economic circulation," says Irfan Tarelli, Director of Land Protection, Ministry of Agriculture.

The interest of farmers, as well as foreign investors, for leasing land is growing.

"The minimum price is 6 thousand new Leks for hectare, thus, a symbolic price that is in accordance with the tax a subject has to pay as a land tax at the local government unit. Another important improvement is made. In case of negligence from the local government units, the attribute is taken by the Ministry of Agriculture and continues the same procedure through the Regional Directories of Agriculture," says Tarelli.

The districts with vast spaces of barren land expected to be leased are Gjirokastra, Elbasani and Korça. The term of lease will depend on the culture that farmers are going to plant. 35 years is the term of lease if the land will be used to plant vineyards, orchards or nuts.
