Ukraine ups deficit of foreign trade in goods in five months

The deficit of Ukraine's foreign trade in goods in January-May 2012 amounted to USD 5.715 billion, an increase of over USD 783 million compared to the same period in 2011. The top three importers of Ukrainian goods were Russia, Turkey and Egypt, according to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine.

"January through May this year, exports of goods amounted to USD 28,203,600,000, whereas imports reached USD 33,918,400,000. The deficit amounted to USD 5,714,800,000 (in January-May 2011 the deficit was USD 4,931,600,000)," the service said.

Compared to the same period in 2011, exports grew by 5.8%, and imports rose by 7.4%.

The statement also notes that in May 2012, exports of goods rose by 7.8% compared with April 2012, while imports grew by 4.3% and amounted to USD 6.248 billion and USD 7.576 billion respectively. The deficit in May 2012 stood at USD 1.3289 billion (in April 2012 the deficit was USD 1.468 billion).

According to statistical data, exports of goods to CIS countries in the first five months of 2012 accounted for 36.8% of total exports, Asia - 27.2% Europe - 24.5%, Africa - 8%, and America - 3.3%.

The top three importers of Ukrainian goods were Russia - 26.5% of total exports (railway locomotives, ferrous metals, and mechanical machinery), Turkey - 5.6% (ferrous metals, oil seeds, and mineral fertilizers) and Egypt - 4.2% (grain crops, ferrous metals, oils and fats of animal or vegetable origin).

Ukraine mainly exported ferrous metals and products from them (a decrease of 6.9% compared with January-May 2011).

Imports from CIS countries amounted to 41.3% of total imports, Europe - 32%, Asia - 19.4%, America - 6%, Africa - 1%, Australia and Oceania - 0.3%.

In the total volume of imports, the largest supplies were made from Russia - 33.2% (mineral fuels, oils and products of its distillation, mechanical machinery, ferrous metals), China - 8.1% (mechanical and electrical machinery, footwear), and Germany - 7.9% (mechanical machinery, ground transportation vehicles, except rail, as well as pharmaceutical products).

Mineral products accounted for 33.2% of Ukrainian imports of goods (a reduction of 9.7%).

According to the State Statistics Service, Ukraine conducted foreign trade operations with 202 countries.
