Russia's wheat production estimated to decline by 4% in 2013: USDA

2012-06-11 10:53:28

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) stated that the output of wheat in Russia, one of the biggest producers is expected to witness a decline of 4 per cent to reach 54 million tonnes during the new agricultural year which commences on July 1, 2012 and ends on June 30, 2013 against 56.231 million tonnes during the same period in 2011-12 as a result of inadequate rainfall in the major producing belts of the country.

Krasnodar, Stavropol and Rostov in southern Russia which account for most of the country's exports have carried on being relatively dry which has hampered the output of wheat.

Last month, the department had stated that it has anticipated that the harvest of Russian wheat will decline to the level of 56 million tonnes only.

Monitoring Agricultural Resources body said, "The yield potential for the harvest in southern Russia, could quickly diminish further if plentiful rains don't fall soon"
