World economy state improving - Oleksandr Petryk

2012-05-11 14:53:29

The latest statistical data and expert opinions suggest that the global economy is stabilizing and its growth is possible in the near term, Deputy Director General of the NBU Economic Department Oleksandr Petryk said in a video address.

"Thus, the IMF improved the global economic growth forecast to 3.5% this year and 4.1% next year," Petryk said.

According to him, in the U.S. growth is projected to 2.1% and 2.4%, respectively. In Europe, there is a recession this year, with forecast slowing to -0.3%, and next year grow is expected to about 1%. In Russia, the economy is growing quite rapidly, at around 4%.

Data on the possible growth in global demand are important for Ukraine, Petryk said, in particular, concerning products of metallurgy, chemistry, agriculture and machine building, which are Ukrainian exports.

The situation on commodity markets worldwide has also improved. Thus, oil prices since the beginning of the year have fallen by 5-7% of their peak level. In particular, the price of Brent crude oil has reduced to 120 USD/barrel. Steel prices have increased moderately (5.4%).

Improving conditions of the global trade will positively tell on the balance of payments in the current year, Petryk said.
