Statistics show Russian inflation, GDP growth highest among G-8

Russia occupied last place among the G-8 countries by inflation rate and first place by growth in gross domestic product (GDP), the Federal Statistics Service Rosstat said Tuesday.
According to Rosstat, inflation in Russia in 2011 amounted to 6.1 %, while the lowest rate among G-8 members has been recorded in Japan with 0.2% deflation.
Russia's GDP rose by 4.3 % in 2011, followed by Germany's 3 %, the statistics showed.
With a 0.9% fall, Japan's GDP growth was the lowest last year among the eight countries.
Among the BRICS countries, the Russian inflation rate was the second lowest and its GDP growth was behind that of China and India.
Rosstat also said Russia's poverty rate in 2011 increased to 12.8 % of the population.
Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that the country would try to keep its inflation in 2012 lower than last year's level of 6.1 %.
