Large local investors target Romania’s agriculture

2012-01-27 16:00:05

Beside renewable energy, agriculture turned into a highly interesting sector for investors. Until recently, the local vegetal farming sector was dominated by what can be defined as strategic investors – those who, unlike financial investors, hold knowledge and are experienced in agriculture. Most of them have been engaged in one way or another previously in the state farming sector, even before the fall of communism. Another category of strategic investors were the Italians having purchased land particularly in Western Romania. But more recently, agriculture turns into a potential investment opportunity – not only for the rising price of land. Billionaire local investor Ion Tiriac and smaller-scale, but highly successful entrepreneur camellia Sucu, recently announced plans to invest in farming. Tiriac Holding plans to invest at least 2,000-3,000ha. This is a diversification of the holding that concentrates on automobile industry, but also holding interests in aviation, real estate and financial sector. Camelia Sucu, having previously developed a furniture production and distribution group, will invest in greenhouses and farms. She did not mention any particular investment. But Sucu also owns a wholesale market in Bucharest, supposed to bring together medium-sized producers and retailers.
