GDP to increase by 4-4.6% in 2011 - expert

The gross domestic product of Ukraine in 2011 may increase by 4-4.6%. This opinion was expressed by the lead researcher, project coordinator at the Institute for Economic Research and Political Consultations, Oleksandra Betliy.

In her view, the GDP will reach the level of 2006, despite last year the economic situation in Ukraine was very difficult. "Next year we expect real GDP to increase by 4-4.6% as compared with this year. I.e. we expect quite a strong growth of GDP, although at a moderate pace," Betliy said.

According to the expert opinion, despite the financial and economic crisis, there were many positive changes in Ukraine in 2010. She implied, in particular, restoration of the vast majority of economic sectors. "Internally oriented sectors developed well, but the largest growth rates were registered in export-oriented sectors, in particular, in mechanical engineering and metallurgy," the expert said.

She also pointed to positive trends in the sphere of attracting investment, particularly in the past few months.

Apart from this, Betliy added, an increase in the prices for food and raw materials was noticeable against international trends. At the same time, gas tariffs were increased for the population in August by 50%, but most local authorities have not yet increased the prices of housing services.

This, in her view, will affect the inflation rate in 2011. "According to our expectations, the inflation rate next year will be slightly higher than 8.9%, as budgeted," the expert said.

As reported, the World Bank improved the real GDP growth forecast in Ukraine up to 4.3% in 2010.
