Ukrainian bankers: Economic situation to worsen in 2012

2011-11-22 14:03:49

The economic situation will worsen in 2012 compared to the current year, and the profile of the Ukrainian banking sector will significantly change, Ukrainian bankers have said at the annual Ukrainian Banking Forum organized by the Adam Smith Institute in Kyiv.

"The year of 2012 will be worse than 2011. This is related to the macro-economic situation in general, not only with what is happening in Ukraine. We need to realize this and prepare for this," Prominvestbank Board Chairman Viktor Bashkirov said.

"The crisis will much affect Ukraine. The balance of payments in Ukraine will accurately react to changes in the global conjuncture, in particular, that on steel, chemicals, capital. We have more pessimistic expectations regarding the next year,” Platinum Bank Director General Greg Krasnov said.

According to Bashkirov, the depletion of working capital is observed in the corporate sector due to the negative impact of the situation on foreign markets and the reduction in lending. "Could this lead to the second circle of problems with loan servicing? I think yes, if this situation continues," he said.

At the same time, the banker said that discussions are starting on a new restructuring of the debts that were previously restructured.

However, according to the board chairman of the First Ukrainian International Bank (FUIB), Konstantin Vaysman, the situation will worsen in the form of a slower growth. "There will be a general decline in the global demand, as a result, this will impact Ukraine. The total situation with liquidity will be quite difficult. But in general, I do not forecast the Armageddon," he stressed.
